The Invention of Moving Pictures
This is the story of the invention of one of the arts or representation cultures or projection of dreams or lectures about life or speech about emotions or memory from our childhood or something that every person can give a name to. This is the story of the invention of cinema.
Most people know Edison as a scientist who works on electricity. This is true but one of his best inventions is the kinetoscope. Edison wanted to record his wife’s last days before her death. Therefore, he built a machine that was able to record one person’s movement at a time in 1891. After that, The French brothers, Lumière brothers, presented projected moving pictures in1895. They made their machine which was inspired by the Edison kinetoscope, called cinematograph. This is the first film.
These inventions created an industry, the cinema industry. First companies were created in 1914 in mostly Europe. After a while films were getting longer and longer and with the way of storytelling they use in films, movies become dominant. People tended to pay more money to watch movies and the production of movies day by day. In addition to this, in the first 30 years, the sector was focused to improve technology and the growth of the industry. In the beginning years of the film industry, the American film industry was not as strong as the European industry. However, after the 1930s today’s most known movie industry star was born in America, Hollywood. After the great born of industry Golden Age of cinema began. In the 1930s and the 1940s, people visited cinemas almost twice a week. Big saloons were opened and extra shops like cafes, restaurants were served in these saloons. In 1946 the biggest attendance at a cinema occurred in Britain and over 31 million people visited the cinema each week. Moreover, in those years adding color and sound to movies were so expensive. There are just a few movies that could use color and sound. The Jazz singer (1927) was one of the first movies that used sound and Wizard of Oz was one of the first colored movies.
On the other hand, today cinema is a pioneer for many technologies and has a huge role to spread cultures around the world, showing dreams to people, and making art on a white big screen. There are huge technological improvements in movie production, screening, and distribution to the world. In the beginning era of cinema, it was an exclusive event for people and they can just watch movies twice or thrice a week unlike today, you can watch many films in a day in cinemas. Those days, producers mostly just send their movies to national cinema saloons, however, if we take a closer look at the present, movies can be distributed to the whole world. In the past people could watch drama, comedy, or action movies but today due to technology people can watch animations, sci-fi movies that take place in space, and 3D movies. Cinema is a kind of book for today, the director or producer or scenarist want to explain what they think or they want to adapt the people to their ideas with movies. Moreover, people can just explain the history of their countries with movies to people all around the world.
In short, cinema was just entertainment in the beginning but now it is the thing that people want to shape. You can create the universe, you can show your culture, you can explain the history or you can just make art with movies.
